Busy Week in the Studio

Preparedness is key when you run a small business and here this week we have had a couple excellent examples. We usually intentionally try to keep a pretty low stock this time of year. January is traditionally a slow month for sales with the holidays being over, few, little or no craft shows to attend, and not many people with extra cash in their pockets  after gift buying season and before tax refunds come in. We don't want lots of soaps & oils sitting on the shelf for extended periods of time; we want the freshest stock possible at all times.

But .... I get a call last week from the husband of a massage therapist who says his wife is 'in love with' our oils and to send everything we have that is available in 1 ounce size.  So 30 ounces later we now have a great many of our single note oils and blends being used by Olga in Brooklyn. If you are in or around the NYC area please consider treating yourself to a massage with our oils by the very talented Olga at Beauty by Olga and tell her Gretchen from ADKaromatherapy sent you. I believe she even sends you home with a little bottle of oil, made just for you.

Then .... a bride contacts me for a kit for a perfume party she wants to throw as part of her bridal shower and I put this together for her :

Offering an aroma bar as part of a shower or party really is tons of fun, therapeutic as well as educational, and also calorie free!  If you are considering doing this it really is very cost effective if you split the cost with friends.

In summary between these orders and an order for our Aromatherapy Introduction Kit I have had a huge stock of empty 1 ounce bottles sitting in the studio unused for several months as we do not usually offer many oils in 1 ounce sizes, and now I am nearly out, and it's time to go buy some more with that preparedness notion in mind!

Scent as Color

This weekend I experimented with using solely fragrance to color soap. Here are some results which I had fun abstracting. I sure am going to miss Picnik when it's gone!

Rose Lavender and Larkspur buds

 Blue Tansy

Coffee and Cocoa

Shorty in the Studio

Here is our little munchkin hard at work with Mr. ADKaromatherapy in the Adirondack Aromatherapy Soap Studio.
She sure does love helping her daddy with all phases of production but especially with the chopping up and wrapping of the soaps. She likes to pretend she is Kung Fu Panda's dad chopping up the vegetables at the family restaurant.

She headed off to kindergarten this past fall
& we have admittedly been able to get more done around here but we sure do miss having her
sunshine~y face in the studio everyday!

“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”

Triple cocoa soap

Making some French Milled Triple Cocoa Soap today. Melting a palm oil free CP soap base with cocoa butter, and adding some cocoa absolute, then some cocoa powder at the end for a dash of color. My original wish was to create a triple cocoa oil by seeking out a 'fractionated' cocoa butter, I love the fractionated oils (e.g. coconut & shea) for time saving & simplicity but a fractionated cocoa oil does not seem to exist. So soap it is. I'll post pics when it's done!

In a poll of 68,000 people the soap stats go down like this:

 48% use BAR SOAP.
38% use BODY WASH
13%  have NO  PREFERENCE & use whatever is available
1% use NEITHER. (pu)

a 10 ounce bottle of body wash = about 30 washes.
a 4 ounce bar of store bought traditional soap such as IVORY  = about 27 washes.
So if you live alone & shower every day theoretically each/either/or should last you almost exactly 1 month.

Next we begin to conduct an experiment in which we discover exactly how many washes our soap lasts!  Stay Tuned!

Inner Peace Symptoms

Some signs and symptoms of inner peace:

• A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.
• An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
• A loss of interest in judging other people.
• A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.
• A loss of interest in conflict.
• A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom).
• Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.
• Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature.
• Frequent attacks of smiling.
• An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.
• An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.
